Working workshops are a cross between scientific workshops and coding sprints or hackathons common among open-source software communities. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wiki2015\/images\/0\/0f\/Houston2014.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>26 participants from 11 different organizations gathered at Rice University at the end of July and beginning of August for the <a href=\"\/wiki\/Houston_2014\">Second Madagascar Working Workshop<\/a>, hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trip.caam.rice.edu\/\">The Rice Inversion Project<\/a>. The topic of the workshop was <strong>parallel high-performance computing<\/strong>. The participants divided into teams of 2-3 people by pairing experienced Madagascar developers with novice users. Each team worked on a small project, creating examples of parallel computing or improving general-purpose tools such as <a href=\"\/RSF\/sfmpi.html\">sfmpi<\/a>, <a href=\"\/RSF\/sfomp.html\">sfomp<\/a>, and (newly created) <strong>sfbatch<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/stampede2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>The participants used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tacc.utexas.edu\/resources\/hpc\/stampede-technical\">Stampede<\/a>, the world&#8217;s seventh most powerful supercomputer, provided by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tacc.utexas.edu\/\">Texas Advanced Computing Center<\/a>, for their computational experiments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Working workshops&#8221; as opposed to &#8220;talking workshops&#8221; are meetings where the participants work together (possibly divided into pairs or small teams) to develop new software code or to conduct computational experiments addressing a particular problem.
